The first step for me before I agree to be a BETA reader is to look at the book’s synopsis and ensure I have an interest in the book. This will help not only myself enjoy the work, yet also benefit the author with a 100% engaged BETA reader. I have to say, I am very honored whenever an author entrusts me with their work of art. I treat it as such and do my utmost to phrase any recommendations in a beneficial way. I am NOT reading the book only for fun, I strive to correct grammar, punctuation, and reduce repetitions, yet I also look out for inconsistencies and flow. When a change is needed I often offer multiple suggestions for the author to to look at. Each suggestion maintains the author’s intent yet fits the grammatical needs as well. I do this to not get my words into a book, yet to help the author brainstorm what they feel best fits their masterpiece. When I read I also make notes on any questions I have. This will help the author know when a reader is unclear on the author’s intent and allows the author a chance to relook at the scene. Finally, I make it my goal to complete the work by, or before, the agreed upon timeline. This allows the author to stay on track for the next step which is the ARC readers.
