What would you do if the electricity went out. If it lasts an hour we all complain and play on our hopefully charged phones. If it is a full day we start to worry about the food in our fridges and complain even more. If it stays out for 48 hours, and yes I have been in this situation when it was 100 degrees outside, what do we do? Well in that case I cried over all the food I had just filled my fridge with, the family ate the popsicles before they melted, and we spritzed each other and our parrots and dogs with water. Continuously. Yet, pause here, what if the power stays out for many months? THAT is what this book proposes.
The main characters in this book are the Harper family. Jason and his wife Rebecca, both in their 50s, and their teenage daughters Evie and Eden. When the power goes out it is Eden who first realizes something is not right, that it is not a simple outage. Pretty soon the rest of the family realizes it too. They are lucky in the sense that Jason Harper had been preparing for the possibility of ‘something’ happening for a very long time, and he trained his family to be prepared. However, what one can’t prepare for is how the rest of humanity is going to handle the situation.
This book was very well written yet there was one part that for me that was not believable, and there were some parts that I skimmed. Yet halfway through I was re-engaged completely and wanted to see what would happen. Would the Harper family come through intact? What about Grandpa Eddie? While he is tough and a hard-worker on his ranch is he ready for real gunfights? What about Rebecca’s sister Margaret and her husband Vern? Can two eco-friendly hippie types truly handle life without power? What about all the prisoners in places with NO POWER to contain them nor with supplies to keep them alive? What about all the teenagers being forced to grow up so quickly? Will life ever return to normal for them? And if you were prepared for ‘something’ is your stuff safe from others who were not prepared? This book is realistic, no zombies here, and that makes it even more chilling. It could really happen!
I encourage you to give this book a shot and read it to the end. Because in my opinion the ending was one of THE BEST parts of the book! The way the author ended the book was creative and very engaging. This book will have you questioning what you would do in this situation. It might even have you making the emergency preparations we are all told to do and yet never seem to do. Maybe I need to start an inventory now, hmmmm. Might just do that!
